News of a remarkable archaeological discovery unearthered at the Waka' site in Guatemala two months ago and announced two weeks ago has just hit the New York Times! During an excavation of a pyramid at the site, Michelle Rich, a National Science Foundation Fellow and Ph.D. student at Southern Methodist University, and Jennifer C. Piehl of Tulane found a chamber containing the remains of two young women and a small cache of exemplary Mayan pottery from the Early Classic period. Dr. David Freidel, co-director of excavations at the site, believes that these women may have been sacrifices.
