AT ARM'S LENGTH, an exhibition featuring two of Africa’s most respected and popular companies, the HANDSPRING PUPPET THEATER of South Africa and the SOGOLON TROUPE
from Mali, presents nearly 100 animated puppets, marionettes and puppet
sculptures used in traditional and contemporary theatrical
performances. Juxtaposed alongside the puppets are performance videos
and photographs, demonstrating the creative possibilities of a true
synthesis of the arts of two geographically distinct and historically
separate regions.
Produced and co-presented by The Museum for African Art.

Founded in 1990 by internationally acclaimed choreographer Júlio T. Leitão, BATOTO YETU {"Our Children" in Swahili} fosters the healthy self-esteem of children of African descent through the joyful media of music, dance and storytelling. The animated puppetry and energetic dancing of BATOTO YETU, as well as the electrifying rhythms of the professional musicians, has shown the strength of our young dancers as cultural ambassadors, cultivating a strong ethic of social responsibility while inspiring audiences around the world.
