a new networked project from Bill Jones & Ben Neill
ANNOUNCING the first NYC performances of XIX, a new project of musician Ben Neill and artist Bill Jones based on samples of 19th century music and art. The music from their networked band combines ambient electronic sound from Neill's mutantrumpet mixed with deep live grooves from John Conte on electric bass, and Jim Mussen on drums/percussion.
In XIX, historical audio samples are digitally manipulated into ambient loops which form the basis for each song. Bill Jones has created a new set of interactive video pieces for XIX based on 19th century art works. Over the past several years, Neill and Jones have developed a playable form of cinema in which they play video images live from their instruments through interactive VJ software.
New applications in both the audio and video fields have opened up a new level of spontaneity and improvisation in the live performance of these pieces. XIX explores the dynamic, expressive possibilities of new digital technologies while simultaneously drawing connections with history.
