March is Women's History Month: Two Must-see Exhibitions in Bushwick

If summer is the time for play and youthful expansion, March may well be the moment for reflection in an atmosphere of relative sobriety. Yesterday I found myself in just such a mood. Notwithstanding a beery lunch and social media flâneur interlude, (plus a crowded opening), I saw work by two artists, Carrie Yamaoka and Kate Teale with current solo shows in Bushwick that fit the bill.

Carrie Yamaoka makes paintings that are deeply involved with materiality and process but not with pictorial imagery. All of her work has reflectivity built in whether it involves stark, though malleable, verisimilitude or a more muted receptivity to light, making appearances changeable depending on the vantage point of the viewer. The viewer becomes a part of the picture, becoming simultaneously an agent and a subject. As the viewer engages and spends time looking, vistas of indeterminate spatial depth open up and quiver on the threshold of legibility.

Carrie Yamaoka is a New York-based artist who has shown her work both nationally and internationally since the 80s. Her most recent solo exhibitions took place at Studio 1.1 in London, Aeroplastics Contemporary in Brussels and Galerie Lange + Pult in Zurich. Yamaoka’s work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Art in America, L’Express, Time Out, Bomb and The New Yorker, among other publications. Her work can be found in the public collections of The Victoria & Albert Museum, London and The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo.

The Sea Is All Around Us

Studio10 presents The Sea Is All Around Us, a solo exhibition of oil paintings and graphite drawings by New York based artist, Kate Teale. In this series, Teale examines two vastly different subjects concurrently: the domestic space of her bed and the Japanese Tsunami of March 2011. She identifies and depicts the visual similarities between the warm folds of her bedclothes and the inexorable swell of the Tsunami caught in freeze-framed footage. The soft graphite of the drawings coupled with Teale’s smooth rendering of the water’s surface belie the wave’s inevitable destruction. Threats to domestic stability, with particular reference to climate change, and the inexhaustible effort to find places where calm and equilibrium can be established are underlying themes.

Kate Teale lives and works in New York City.  Born in England, she received her B.A. at Oxford University; her Painting Diploma at City and Guilds of London Art School and her MFA at C.U.N.Y. Hunter College.  Kate’s first solo show in New York City was at Spring Gallery in SoHo in 1996. Recent exhibitions include:  Monya Rowe Gallery, Chelsea NYC; Jim Kempner Gallery, Chelsea NYC; AIR Gallery NYC; ‘Keeping It Real’, at Richmond Center for the Arts, Kalamazoo; and she has had solo shows at Kristen Frederickson Contemporary Art, NYC; Hampden Gallery, UMASS, Amherst and Yearsley Spring Gallery, Philadelphia.  Work can also be seen at Pierogi Gallery flat files, Brooklyn.  Kate teaches at Parsons School of Design, and has also taught at Pratt Institute, Hunter College, and Yale (Graduate drawing, School of Architecture).  Kate was a New York Foundation of the Arts Fellow in Painting 2008.  She is founder/director of Big&Small/Casual Gallery in Long Island City www.bigandsmallcasual.net

Ramapo Exhibition Explores Environmental Issues

(MAHWAH, NJ) - An art exhibition exploring environmental concerns "It's the End of the World as We Know it (and I Feel Fine)" opens at Ramapo College on January 30 in the Kresge and Pascal galleries on campus. There will be an opening reception on January 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. Artist and curator's talks begin at 6 p.m. The exhibition continues through March 6. Additional programs will be announced.

The somewhat ironic title is taken from a 1987 song by the band R.E.M. The 14 artists on view explore contemporary views of nature and habitat expressed through paintings and drawings of the landscape. They envision the natural world in relationship to pressing environmental issues such as climate change, industrial pollution, loss of habitat, consumption of natural resources and human-caused disasters.

Whether imagined or literal, the images in this exhibition directly confront feelings of shock and even despair at the forces of such radical changes taking place on our planet.

Exhibiting artists include George Boorujy, Adam Cvijanovic, Peter Edlund, Joy Garnett, Kimberley Hart, Eve Andree Laramee, Sarah McCoubrey, Jason Middlebrook, Aviva Rahmani, Lisa Sanditz, Charlotte Schulz, Eva Strubel, Sarah Trigg and Marion Wilson.

According to exhibition curator Amy Lipton, "Artists often have a prophetic role, and throughout history they have alerted us to problems that are unforeseen or overlooked. The artists in this exhibition attempt to meet the challenges of the new ecological imperative by bringing attention to the need for protection, preservation, and action. Using realism, fantasy or process as a source for imagination and transformation, they seek to create an awareness of loss and beauty in the marginal, the overused and the threatened."

Lipton is an independent curator and co-director of ecoartspace, a non-profit organization that creates opportunities for addressing environmental issues through the arts. Formerly a New York City gallerist, she has organized exhibitions in museums, galleries, sculpture parks, environmental centers and in the public realm. Her writing has appeared in numerous books and publications, and she frequently lectures on art and environmental issues. Recent and past projects include "BiodiverCITY," a public art project in Washington, DC in 2012; "Nurturing Nature" at Concordia College in Bronxville, NY; "Ecovention" at the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati, OH; "Imaging the River" at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, NY; and "E.P.A., Environmental Performance Actions" at  Exit Art in New York City.

This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Secret Wars, the second exhibition in Proteus Gowanus’ yearlong exploration of Battle, explores the cryptic ways of warfare waged behind the cloak of invisibility. From neurophysical conflict deep inside the human amygdala, to the broadcast signals used by spies and intelligence agencies, to the everyday observation of ordinary citizens by omniscient bureaucracies, Secret Wars reveals covert communications hiding in plain sight. Curated by Proteus Gowanus creative director Tammy Pittman and anthropologist Thomas Ross Miller, the exhibition brings artists from New York, Amsterdam and Berlin to trace the gaps, silences, and blackouts that conceal vital and deadly knowledge.

Who controls secret information, and who has the power to understand it? How do we protect ourselves from unseen enemies? Who wins and who loses when the battle is unending and unknowable? Through art, artifacts, books, sound and surveillance, these installations render what is absent present and what is invisible visible. Inside a special room, mysterious and hypnotic short-wave radio messages in unbreakable codes are beamed to hidden spies. Lost treasures, occult symbols and predator drones appear and disappear, closely guarded enigmas shrouded in obscure and half-forgotten codes.

*Joy Garnett's paintings have utilized representations of the 'techno-military sublime' since the late 1990s. These four paintings are part of her recent 'Predator' or 'Wikileaks' project, (2011 - ongoing), comprised of multiple series of monochromatic target or grid-like compositions that use night vision and heat-seeking imagery as source material. Based on screen-grabs of various declassified or leaked US military videos of secret operations, the Predator series takes technical images of machine vision and translates them into ambiguous objects.

 

Eric Corriel: The Over And The Under in Harlem

The Over And The Under

This site-specific video installation by Eric Corriel is about removing people from their terrestrial urban experience and placing them, for just a few moments, at the zenith of the over and the nadir of the under, which is to say, above the clouds and below the sea.

This installation took place in Harlem, New York, from October 11th, 2012 – October 28th, 2012. It was produced in partnership with Chashama and the New York Foundation for The Arts' Curatorial Program.

Join us Thursday, Dec 13th, for the opening of Field Projects Show #10: Your Face is a Landscape. The works in this exhibition were selected by guest curators Sara Reisman and Reina Shibata from our second international Open Call. Sixteen artists were selected for Show #10 based on themes that emerged in the process of reviewing more than 400 submissions.

As if under advisement by the Ouija, the curators were moved by several recurring symbols and themes in the pool of submissions that signify or document the human face and its absence, as well as surreal landscapes with unexpected layers of threading, pointillist dotting, and actual water. Between the face and the landscape, there are mirrors, masks, flowers, and the appearance of language-based and paranormal messages.  As when seen from an airplane, the landscape with its dunes, crevasses, slopes, and patches of green and brown can be perceived as being part of a larger, figurative whole, or the face of a spirit. In the words of Fleetwood Mac, “…I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills/ ‘Til the landslide brought me down.”

In addition to the artists chosen for Show #10: Your Face is a Landscape, thirteen runners-up were selected and highlighted on our website. These artists include: Stephen Barnwell, Oreen Cohen, Seth Cohen, Karen Lederer, Eric LoPresti, Jordan Kasey, Ramesh Pithiya, Justin Pollman, Ralph Pugay, Sausan Saulat, Denise Treizman, Bailey Scieszka, and Chris Victor.

Guest curators Sara Reisman and Reina Shibata are Director and Deputy Director (respectively) of New York City's Percent for Art program which commissions permanent artworks for City-owned public spaces throughout the five boroughs. Reisman is also an independent curator and writer who is the 2012-2013 guest curator at Forever & Today, Inc., and has organized nearly fifty exhibitions and projects in New York and elsewhere. Reina Shibata is a writer, researcher and curator who previously held positions at the RISD Museum, the Harvard Art Museum, and the Judd Foundation, where she pursued her interests in contemporary art and public access to art.

As an artist-run space, Field Projects is committed to opening the field and exhibition opportunities to other working artists through our semiannual Open Call to artists.  All of the submissions we receive are considered not only for a single group exhibition but also for shows throughout the year.  The theme of each Open Call is unscripted, allowing our guest curators free reign to choose the participants and thematic content of each unique show.
