Art in General Launches New Online Open Call App

Art in General OPEN CALL FOR PROJECT PROPOSALS (from email announcement):

On January 14th, Art in General launches a new and simple online application for artists presenting project proposals to its new commissions program.

Art in General commissions challenging new work from visual artists. With a yearly open call and a simple online application process launched this year, Art in General invites artists to propose projects in any medium or format—from painting to sculpture to performance to video to other, perhaps undefined, type of art or interdisciplinary work. This open call is for artists with studio or post-studio practice. It has no thematic or spatial parameters. Artists can choose to present a project proposal based on long-standing or emerging interests.

Only complete online applications will be reviewed, replacing all application forms used previously. Information on Art in General's commissions program, as well as the guidelines and online application is available at:

Deadline: Friday, March 31, 2006 at 11:59 PM, ET

Prior to this deadline, Art in General will host a series of public programs to answer questions about the online application and to provide technical support to applicants:

Computer programmer and web designer John Weir makes a step-by-step presentation about how to efficiently navigate and use Art in General’s online application designed for artists presenting project proposals for the new commissions program. eyelevelgallery is seeking submissions of artist multiples and publications for an upcoming exhibition entitled EYELEVEL RE-SHELVING INITIATIVE: 2

Submissions may include ZINES, bookworks, sound pieces, post-cards, manifestos, comics, and anything else that is fit for a shelf.

Submissions must be received no later than February 1st, 2006 and should include:

Welcome to COPILANDIA: A Copyright-Free Island

COPILANDIA is a copyright-free island situated on a boat moored in the Guadalquivir River. Equipped with art materials, copiers of all media, computers, and sound systems, COPILANDIA multiplies, disseminates and celebrates the free exchange and circulation of art and ideas.

Imagining the dissolution of intellectual property as an artistic medium, Copilandia is a collaborative enterprise of cultural recombination. It promotes an alternative gift economy that subverts late-capitalism’s stranglehold over information by encouraging the free distribution of art. As a temporary autonomous zone between Sevilla and Triana, it accepts and encourages the transgression of all frontiers that limit and fetter artistic and cultural experimentation.

The aphorism "property is theft" has never been more resonant than it is today. With the current explosion of new digital information and communication technologies, cadres of lawyers representing media and entertainment conglomerates have marshaled their forces to prevent our cultural heritage from entering into the public domain by restricting the freedom of communication. Intoxicated by the aroma of increasing corporate profits, they are assailing the fair use of intellectual property by lobbying governments to extend copyright limits. With draconian glee, they encourage jailing individuals who copy music and computer programs for personal use, and censoring artists for plagiarizing their own art.

What these lobotomized pawns of the infotainment industry refuse to recognize is the indisputable fact that the raw material of art is art. That creativity always appropriates the results of past creativity. That new art continually re-purposes already existing art, making it something new.

We live in a society that propagates a cult of originality in a culture of copies. Now that the free play of parody and satire has become theft, we mourn their death and conceive Copilandia out of its ashes. With pleasure, we take off the gags that stifle creative expression and refuse to put money in the meter every time we sing a song. Copilandia is born out of the belief that being copied is the highest form of flattery. Copilandia believes that a copy is a terrible thing to waste.

So, put on your pirate cap and hop on board. After all, we're all on the same ship. Let's get ready to plunder what’s already yours and enjoy the abundance of cultural goods that lies before you; a generous gift offered by the artists included in this public intervention. We only ask that you value the exchange and circulation of creativity and knowledge that builds worlds and invents fantastic fictions. Come join us as we forge subjective truths and personal mythologies. Copilandia calls for expanding the legal limits of popular culture by opening up the data banks to let everybody push the tools of artistic production to their fullest power.

CALL TO ARTISTS!!!
Artists Space invites you to donate small works on paper (including photographs, prints, etc.) for our annual Night of 1,000 Drawings. This open call exhibition and sale benefits Artists Space's programs, and provides an opportunity for emerging artists to display their work and to find potential collectors. When a work sells at the event, we collect the buyer's contact information and (with their consent) pass it on to the artist. Please read the following information completely, including the FAQ below, before you donate your drawing(s).

To submit work:
1. Choose 1-2 unframed works on paper (photos and digital prints are OK), NO BIGGER than 11" x 14".

2. On the back of each work, legibly write your name, address and phone number (NO post-its please).

3. Send or drop off your work to: Night of 1,000 Drawings, Artists Space, 38 Greene Street, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10013. If dropping off work in person, please do so during regular gallery hours: 11am to 6pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

4. DEADLINE: 5pm Monday December 5th. If a drawing is mailed in, it must be RECEIVED by Artists Space on this date to be included.

5. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for return of any unsold work. If no SASE is included, ARTISTS SPACE cannot be responsible for return of work. You will receive a thank you letter and notification around mid-January 2006.

Drawings are priced at $30 (7 x 5 inches and smaller) and $50 (Larger than 7 x 5 inches).

After 8pm, there will   be an open bar sponsored by Brooklyn Brewery and IZZE Sparkling Juice.
