Come experience the ART OF DISCO - Where Dance Music meets Cultural Politics. Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos presents the group exhibition Do You Think I'm Disco? – the first survey of its kind to focus on the impact of dance music culture on contemporary art from January 14, 2006 through March 18, 2006. This exhibition focuses on the complex dialogue between club culture and society, and the subsequent influence on identity politics after the U.S.-based liberation movements of the late 1960s to 1970s. This survey includes works in drawing, installation, mixed media, music, painting, performance, photography, sculpture, and sound by established and emerging artists: Matias Aguilar, Negar Ahkami, Elia Alba, Arthur Aviles Typical Theater, Larissa Bates, Ramdasha Bikceem, Phillip Brophy, Don Bury, Karlos Cárcamo, Curtis B. Carman, Mel Cheren, Phil Collins, Joe De Hoyos, Discoteca Flaming Star, Alex Donis, Carl Eckhoff, Ray Felix, Patrick “Pato” Hebert, Derek Jackson, Luis Jacob, James Jaxxa, Jayson Keeling, Swati Khurana, Kalup Linzy, Barbara Malaran, Christian Marclay, Helio Melo, Iván Monforte, Ronald Bruce Monroe, Carrie Moyer, Rico Reyes, Nelson Santos, Jamel Shabazz, Shinique Smith, Ginger Brooks Takahashi, Mickalene Thomas, Boris Torres, Tsk-Tsk-Tsk, Shirley Wegner, Edwina White, Megan Whitmarsh, and Matt Wolf. This exhibition was organized by Edwin Ramoran, Director and Curator, Longwood Arts Project.
