Timbuktu features

The July-August issue of Natural History magazine features a five-page article on Timbuktu, an excerpt adapted from the authors' forthcoming book, Timbuktu: The Sahara's Fabled City of Gold (Walker & Co., 2007, due out in August).

In addition the magazine's Online Extras: Web Links section features links to Unesco's and Worldheritagesite.org's web entries for Timbuktu; the Timbuktu Manuscript Project site; the web site of Shindouk, chief of the Tuareg community of Ouladnagim; and an extensive selection (pdf) of Ray Kea's Archaeology of West African Empires.

AnthroSource now available

The Goldwater Library is pleased to announce that the AnthroSource online resource is now available to researchers * through the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The database, developed by the American Anthropological Association in partnership with the University of California Press, brings together 100 years of scholarly publication by the AAA, including full text access to 15 current titles and an archive of all AAA journals:

An online portal to full text anthropological resources, AnthroSource offers access to over 45,000 articles in AAA journals, newsletters, bulletins, and monographs; a linked, searchable database containing past, present, and future AAA periodicals;  centralized access to a wealth of other key anthropological resources, including text, sound, and video; and interactive services to foster communities of interest and practice throughout the discipline.

AnthroSource is a fully integrated information resource. Its powerful search engine makes precision research quick and easy. Citations in article PDF files are dynamically linked through CrossRef to other publications, both within and beyond AnthroSource.

World Rock Art

Rock Art Today
Rock art is a major part of our cultural heritage. It is certainly the most ancient and perhaps the most vulnerable. How can we best preserve the millions of images on rocks throughout the world, which constitute a kind of gigantic museum collection exposed to the depredations of nature and human activity?

Preserving a Worldwide Heritage: A Discussion about Rock Art Conservation
J. Claire Dean, an archaeological conservator in private practice; Josephine Flood, former director of the Aboriginal Environment section of the Australian Heritage Commission; and Jo Anne Van Tilburg, director of the Rock Art Archive at UCLA's Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, talk with Neville Agnew and Jeffrey Levin of the Getty Conservation Institute.

U.S. Rock Art in the Twenty-first Century: Problems and Prospects
The last two decades have witnessed a dramatic change in the status of North American rock art, expressed in the United States by numerous research advances and a greater concern for conservation and site management. While these improvements are cause for optimism, serious problems persist, including the lack of trained rock art conservators and limited resources for site documentation and management.

Building Capacity to Conserve Southern African Rock Art
Over the years, the GCI has facilitated conservation and training programs to improve the management of rock art sites, particularly in the Americas and Australia. The lessons learned from these programs have been valuable in structuring the Institute's most recent involvement in rock art conservation—the Southern African Rock Art Project.
