Title of installation: Piss & Vinegar (art and ferment)
Date: 2015
Mixed media. Bottles of artisanal red wine vinegar fermented in small batches by the artist; recipe box with photographs.
“Piss & Vinegar (art and ferment)” reflects the pioneering spirit of the artist’s grandparents: Egyptian poet and beekeeper Ahmed Zaky Abushady and his English wife Annie. As steward of their archive, Garnett produces works that reflect its intertwining narratives. The installation for FOODshed includes bottles of Garnett’s home-fermented red wine vinegar, labeled with an adaptation of Abushady’s bee logo, with photo-documentation of the Abushady apiaries as well as Garnett’s vinegar-making process.
Joy Garnett's “Piss & Vinegar” appears in the form of anecdote and recipe in The Artists' and Writers' Cookbook, edited by Natalie Eve Garrett (powerHouse Books, 2016).
Exhibitions: FOODshed: Art and Agriculture in Action, curated by Amy Lipton at CR10, Linlithgo, NY August 8 to September 5, 2015
