ArtCycle Announces A New Prize | Open Call for MFA Students and Recent Graduates

ArtCycle.com is pleased to announce the ArtCycle Discovers Prize, a new initiative that will add young and emerging artists to our roster of first-rate talents. We’re giving ten MFA students and some recent graduates a head start in the marketplace by introducing their work to our ever-growing base of collectors.

This is an open call competition for second-year MFA students who are currently enrolled in a visual arts program in New York City. We are also accepting submissions from recent graduates, no more than two years out. Ten will be selected for a one-on-one crits, in a gallery setting, with Barry Schwabsky, art critic for The Nation and co-editor of international reviews for Artforum. These 10 finalists will also comprise a new section of our website, where collectors will find an array of fresh and inspired works of art offered at affordable prices.

There will be a $1,000 cash prize for the winner of the “ArtCycle Discovers” prize. In addition, the top five finalists will be invited to participate in a group show at the exciting new Gallery Brooklyn.

- Cover sheet (include name, phone number, and current school or alma mater)
- Artist statement (no more than one page)

The Committee for Tacit History is issuing a call for proposals for a Monument to Cold War Victory, an open-call competition for a public monument commemorating the outcome of the Cold War. Artists from around the world are encouraged to submit proposals by November 1, 2012.

Monument to Cold War Victory is a conceptual project by the artist Yevgeniy Fiks, taking the form of an open-call, international competition for a public, commemorative work of art. For over two decades, public signifiers of the Cold War, such as the Berlin Wall, have been framed in terms of destruction and kitsch. A monument created at the moment of its own destruction, the Wall encapsulates the continuing geopolitical imagination of the conflict as linear, continuous, binary, and terminal: the culmination of a now-historicized narrative of competing empires. But while the impact of half a century of sustained ideological conflict still reverberates through all forms of public and private experience—from Middle Eastern geographies of containment to the narrative structures of Hollywood—it has yet to be acknowledged through a public and monumental work of art. The Cold War, the longest and most influential conflict of the twentieth century, has no publicly commissioned commemoration in the United States.

This project examines the enduring genre of war monuments, memorials, and  institutionally framed and commissioned artworks. How might the legacy of the Cold War, in all its complex material, social, and cultural forms, be visually articulated? In what ways might the notion of “victory,” implicit in all retroactive commemorations of conflict, be interpreted? Can the traditional, formal structure of the monument, and the historical revisionism endemic to that form, be redefined?

Artists are invited to participate in this project by submitting a proposal for a public monument commemorating the outcome of the Cold War by November 1, 2012. All submissions must be made through the website: www.coldwarvictorymonument.com. Submissions should include: a one-page narrative text on your proposed work and its relationship to the legacy of the Cold War, the notion of “victory,” and its reevaluation (if any) of the monument form; a visual schema in the form of three images; and an artist CV. A select number of finalists will be awarded a stipend and the opportunity to further develop their proposal for an institutional exhibition. The submitter of the winning proposal will be awarded a cash prize, and their concept will be implemented and installed in a publicly accessible location, to be determined, in the United States.

Monument to Cold War Victory will be juried by a distinguished panel of cultural and intellectual figures, including Vito Acconci, Susan Buck-Morss, Boris Groys, Vitaly Komar, Viktor Misiano, and Nato Thompson.

MYSELF 

A call for submissions for a group exhibition with catalogue entitled MYSELF. Deadline for received submissions in office is Monday August 9, 2010. 

THEME and EXHIBITION DETAILS: This exhibition will explore the widest possible definition of the term “self-portrait” as it applies to all forms of contemporary art and experimental media. The exhibition will be curated and organized by Gallery Director Marjorie Vecchio, while catalogue co-essayists in conversation include Joy Garnett and Mira Schor. Chelsea Otakan will design the catalogue. 

EXHIBITION DATES: January 18 – February 18, 2011, opening lecture and reception January 20, 2011 (dates subject to change). All exhibiting artists are invited to the opening lecture and reception, however, depending on funding, only a few artists will be chosen to receive transportation and hotel stipends. 

GALLERY INFORMATION: Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery of the University of Nevada, Reno is a 2,000 sq foot contemporary art gallery dedicated to supporting regional, national and international emerging and mid-career artists. Located in Northern Nevada’s high desert within an hour of both Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake, the Reno area has a rich culture and vibrant art community. The University of Nevada, Reno Art Department includes over 900 thoughtful and inspiring art students per semester at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including BA, BFA and MFA programs. ELIGIBILITY: This call is open to all visual/multi-media artists, preferably without gallery representation (though those with representation will be considered) working in any 2D, 3D and 4D media including painting, mixed-media, drawing, printmaking, fiber, textiles, photography, sculpture, text, video, ceramics, film, graphics, sound, music, installation, performance, etc. All works submitted must be available for the duration of the show. Some projectors, monitors, and other technical equipment are available, please include in your submission which equipment you can provide or which you require. Artists must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
 
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: All completed submissions must be received in the gallery office by Monday August 9, 2010.
 
FEE: There is no submission fee.

In our second year, the Conference on Intellectual Property will continue to explore intellectual property in a cross-disciplinary context. What is it, how has it evolved as a concept, and in what ways do we feel its practical and theoretical impact upon academic, economic, legal and technological fields? From plagiarism, to patent law, to the Creative Commons and beyond, the conference is sure to offer a remarkable breadth and depth of insights and approaches to what may well be the defining issue of our time. Program Goal

As legal and judicial issues now permeate every aspect of social, political and cultural life, artistic production is no longer immune. The Art & Law Residency provides an intellectual and artistic setting for participants to engage in ongoing discussions and debates that examine the overlap and disconnect between artistic production and the law from historical, social, ethical and intellectual standpoints. Using law as both a discourse and medium, new visual artwork and critical writing will come into being through the Program. All the participants will also gain experience and knowledge they can carry into the future beyond the Program.

 

Overview

The core of the Program will be semi-monthly Seminars directed at the theoretical and critical examination of current art and law issues. Seminars will take place at the law firm of Morrison & Foerster LLP. Faculty as well as leading legal scholars and visiting artists will lead these Seminars. During the course of the Program, artists and writers will develop new projects and papers and receive support from Faculty on a regular basis to discuss and address the aesthetic, practical, philosophical, legal and judicial aspects of their work. The Residency will culminate in a public Exhibition and Symposium held at the Maccarone Gallery in New York City where the participants will exhibit their projects and present papers. 

 

What Is Offered

Seminars series: Twice a month, a legal scholar, artist and/or Program Faculty will lead Seminars as well as assign related readings. Topics for lectures and group discussions will include practical, theoretical, philosophical and speculative perspectives on art, property (tangible and intangible), contract, constitutional, and international law as well as touch upon subjects such as free speech. 

Legal consultation and representation: Access to private consultations with attorneys and work with assigned pro bono representation for individual projects as required. Additional legal advice and guidance in the form of individual meetings to discuss general practical and theoretical questions may be arranged.

Exhibition and Symposium: The culminating Exhibition and Symposium will be held at the Maccarone Gallery, in New York City, in August 2010. Art criticism participants will present papers at an evening Symposium and visual artists will display their final work during this Exhibition. A modest stipend will be provided towards production costs and/or research materials.

Participation

Participants are required to attend semi-monthly Seminars as well as participate actively in group discussion and individual project and paper development. Participants who successfully complete the Seminar series will participate in the final Exhibition and Symposium. The semi-monthly Seminars will be held on Mondays from 6-8pm at the law firm Morrison & Foerster LLP. Seminars commence on March 8, 2010.

Eligibility

Applicants must have a minimum four-year professional record.  Visual artists working in all media may apply. Writers may have backgrounds in Art History, Art Theory, and Art Criticism and be strongly engaged with contemporary visual art. Artists and writers interested in issues of constitutional law, contracts, property, free speech and intellectual property are especially encouraged to apply.
