Apparently, our recent panel discussion from last Saturday at Printed Matter has legs. Organized by Greg Allen with Chris Habib, and me... and a lively audience.... we tried to focus on Richard Prince's contested Canal Zone series itself, instead of becoming hopelessly embroiled in another hyper-emotional discussion about copyright. Good idea from Greg, who felt it high time we take a serious look at the actual paintings, which where coldly ignored by the very court that banished them.

I made a recording which can now be freely streamed, downloaded and redistributed via Archive.org:

The Secret Ingredient Turned Out To Be Infringiness

Well that cat's out of the bag.

Joy Garnett posted audio from the Richard Prince Canal Zone discussion she, Chris Habib and I had Saturday night at Printed Matter. It's available for streaming or download at the Internet Archive. OR for remixing, autotuning, and stop-action animating, whatever you want, since artpanelsjustwanttobefree it's public domain.

It clocks in at almost an hour and a half, and who knows what you'll find in there. I was too high on life and drunk on power--I was running the projector, too-- to really remember what was said. Though I do remember something about megayachts, Perry Mason vs Law & Order; and wishing you were Rasta and/or punk. So really, something for everyone.

Many thanks to Chris and Joy, to Keith and Max and the PM Crew, and especially to the awesome and engaged audience. We'll do it again for either the damages hearing or the Supreme Court phase.

The ongoing Cariou v. Prince trial has presented a high-stakes platform for debating copyright, appropriation, fair-use and artists' rights. One thing that's been oddly missing from the discussion, though, is the art itself.

Printed Matter will host a raucous crit of Richard Prince's little-seen but much-contested Canal Zone paintings, culminating in an open-forum, Iron Chef-style evaluation of each artwork in terms of content, aesthetics, and infringiness.

Using bootleg copies of Prince's banned exhibition catalogue and excerpts from the artist's own sworn deposition testimony which were never entered into evidence in court, panelists Joy Garnett, Greg Allen, and Chris Habib will take a closer, critical look at Prince's paintings and practice in an art historical context. 

Joy Garnett is an artist and writer in Brooklyn, NY. She is also the founder of the blog NEWsgrist (where spin is art).

Greg Allen has been writing about the creative process at greg.org: the making of, since 2001. He published Canal Zone Richard Prince YES RASTA: Selected Court Documents from Cariou v. Prince et al. in 2011.

Chris Habib is an artist and the curator of HELP/LESS, which runs through Sept. 29th at Printed Matter.

NYU Comedies of Fair U$e (2006): Molotov talk now up on YouTube

My ancient googlevideo account just prompted me to transfer an old video to YouTube. I couldn't imagine what it was. It turned out to be my voice-over + slide show from the 2006 conference at NYU "Comedies of Fair U$e", organized by Larry Lessig and Lawrence Weschler for the New York Institute for the Humanities (that's LW's voice at the beginning of the clip introducing me and the subject of the panel). It was a great conference: all the panels were organized by cultural category (publishing, fiction writing, documentary film, visual art, music sampling, etc). The visual art panel included me and my then nemesis, Susan Meiselas, Art Spiegelman, Lebbeus Woods and Judge Alex Kozinsky. Here's my spiel, in a tightly wound 13-1/2 minutes (as opposed to my 45min Columbia Univ. talk given in 2004 on the same subject -- by 2006 I was much clearer on the issues):

Rob Storr provides a clear introduction and overview of the historical and contemporary issues around artists and appropriation. These are similar tensions to what the open educational movement in terms use are reuse and open educational practice are experiencing in teaching practice and general OEP practice.

Rob Storr is an artist, critic, curator and in 2006 was appointed Professor of Painting and Dean of the School of Art at Yale University. He was curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, from 1990 to 2002. Mr. Storr has taught at the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU, at CUNY, the Bard Center for Curatorial Studies, Rhode Island School of Design, Tyler School of Art, New York Studio School, and at Harvard. He has written numerous catalogs, articles, and books, and is the recipient of many honors and awards, too many to name here. He is currently Consulting Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and in 2007 was chosen commissioner of the 2007 Venice Biennale, the first American invited to assume that position.

Briefly:

Artist and NEWSgrist blogger Joy Garnett is joined in conversation by art historian and attorney Virginia Rutledge, critic and curator Rob Storr, and artist Oliver Wasow to discuss the creative methods and ideas associated with appropriation art today, as issues of appropriation enter the broader public and legal debate forum and copyright infringement lawsuits between artists rise. The panelists will discuss why appropriation and other forms of visual referencing are important elements of making art and how to defend these practices both in and beyond the courtroom.
