Real recipes with humorous (dark), brief but informative essays. Cautionary tales, food chain fables. Dorothy Parker meets M.F.K. Fisher's How to Cook a Wolf in a Bruce Sterlingesque post-apocalyptic future. Heston Blumenthal-style cooking and eating, where the eating experience is accompanied by e.g. headphones with sounds of the sea (or people screaming or moaning in our case). Illustrated accordingly.

From the Agency of Unrealized Projects (AUP) -> e-flux

Unlike unrealized architectural projects, which are frequently exhibited and circulated, unrealized artworks tend to remain unnoticed or little known. But perhaps there is another form of artistic agency in the partial expression, the incomplete idea, the projection of a mere intention? Agency of Unrealized Projects (AUP) seeks to document and display these works, in this way charting the terrain of a contingent future.

Though the state of being unrealized implies the potential for realization, not all projects are intended to be carried out. In other instances, artists deliberately leave works incomplete, to record very interesting "failures" or experiments. Other planned projects involve consciously utopian, non-utilitarian, and conceptual spaces that were not made available for realization. Whether censored, forgotten, postponed, impossible, or rejected, unrealized projects form a unique testament to the speculative power of non-action.

Good-Bye to All That: Artnet, 1996-2012

Long ago, in an art world far away and online, long before blogs, before Blouinopolis, Galleristopia, and HuffingPuffingtonia.....way way long before Hyperbolicallergica, Twittersylvania, Artfagolicious or even Newsgripe, there was Artnet.....

 

Somehow it doesn't feel like it was that long ago. Summer of '99, I was an artist working a full-time day job in a museum, typically bored, marginalized and underpaid. One day I answered the phone at my desk and it was Walter Robinson, who I'd never met, and about whom I had heard only some scant, low-level art world gossip. He was calling to ask me to write an article for something called Artnet. It was online. (So was I). He needed someone to cover a big, multi-faceted traveling show that had just opened at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts: "Cosmos: From Romanticism to the Avant-garde, 1801-2001." I happened to be headed to Montreal that summer (how'd he know?). He would edit it, I would get paid. We'd do it all by email.

It was a struggle, writing my first review of a vast museum show. But after submitting my draft, for the first time I found myself occupying the weird terrain where negotiations between writers and their editors take place. It felt good. The results, "Romancing the Sky," was not too terrible, and Walter invited me to consider a new project. Soon I found myself penning a regular column, "Into Africa," for which I covered exhibitions of contemporary and tribal African or African-influenced art around town. Over the course of 18 months, I wrote nine pieces, secure in the fact that my fledgling efforts would be subjected to the stern rigor of Walter's editing.

Since then, I've had the pleasure (and the pain) of working with other editors who continue to show me, through similarly weird processes, how to write well. But it was Walter who showed me how to write with seeming ease about art, how to be accessible without dumbing-down, how to be lively without being trashy (no, really), and how to be serious without being deadly dull.

After yesterday's sad news that Artnet magazine would be ceasing activity, I visited its Wikipedia entry to see what needed updating. Someone had already posted the news and citations, so I looked at the very abbreviated list of contributors, and decided to make it inclusive. This took the better half of a morning going through Artnet's archives. It struck me that nearly everyone at some point or another has written for Artnet. There are artists like myself, unknown and well-known, art writers, some of whom were just starting out and who now helm major magazines. There are curators, dealers, former museum directors, collectors, art fair instigators, pop-up scholars, bald capitalists, paparazzi, art astrologers, tricksters, bloviators, poets, speculators, gossips, and all manner of gadfly. Every one of these individuals has a diverting Artnet origin myth to tell, I'm sure. Artnet was pre-blog. After the dawn of the blogs it amazingly kept going. It was ahead of its time, and right on time. It will be missed.

Announcing Whitney Stories: a new online magazine

The Whitney Museum has just unleashed its new online initiative, Whitney Stories.

From the press release:

The Whitney is introducing Whitney Stories, a new quarterly online magazine designed to invite readers to engage with the multiple histories and narratives that make the Museum a compelling place to visit—in the galleries or online.

Our first issue, “Whitney of the Future,” provides a look at events surrounding the May 2011 groundbreaking on our new building in downtown Manhattan, designed by architect Renzo Piano and scheduled to open to the public in 2015. Future issues of Whitney Stories will continue to offer our visitors a behind-the-scenes look at Museum projects large and small.

Produced and published by Whitney staff, Whitney Stories is a publication designed to grow and change as the Museum does. Readers can subscribe to our RSS feed or social media channels to follow along as the Whitney’s story unfolds.

Lost Library, cont'd: Friends + Strangers

Lost Library Project, cont'd

Five days ago I started sharing my personal library by depositing selections of books in the window wells of Soho. These wells offer a dry place as well as a 'natural' book shelf that invites passersby to stop and browse. Upon depositing these books, I immediately shoot a photo and tweet it, along with their location and the hashtag #LostLibrary.

The project offers food for thought about ownership and sharing in an age where we are increasingly encouraged to license our content (music, books, etc) as opposed to buying it, thereby making us beholden to terms and conditions that very often legally or 'physically' prevent us from giving things away or sharing them with friends and strangers.

Documentation of the Lost Library Project is archived on flickr and tweeted photos are posted to tumblr. Begun on June 19th 2011, Lost Library is an ongoing social media performance.

Just Launched: Lost Library is a new social media project by painter, thinker and Newsgrist mill Joy Garnett. She writes, in today’s Newsgrist newsletter (which I’ve subscribed to since its inception and still adore as a stalwart of the very best days of Internet culture-gone-by, as they do.):

I am sharing the library that I’ve been accumulating for 15 years by giving some of it away. Every day I will pick a good window well in Soho, deposit some books, and immediately tweet the location with a photograph and the hashtag #LostLibrary.

These are books for people to browse and to take away if they like. Documentation is archived on flickr and tweeted photos are posted to tumblr. Begun on June 19th 2011, Lost Library is an ongoing social media performance.

I want the Smithsonian Books volume of Space Time Infinity, which could ostensibly still be languishing on Grand between Broadway and Crosby. But probably not!

PS: Also new by Joy: Virilio Now, which I want to have an exclamation point at the end but sadly does not, being the title of a book and all!
