ABC No Rio will honor downtown artist Valerie Caris Blitz with an exhibition of her last works. Caris Blitz died at the age of 52 on July 28, 2009, after a long illness. She was well known for her performance art and appearances in more than 40 films during the 1980s, most notably Ari Roussimoff’s Shadows of the City.

Valerie’s diagnosis of HIV in 1989 did not stop her will to create art; instead her work became more conceptual. Her pieces “Queen Sex Positive” and “Vestment” were part of the Sur Rodney Sur show Blood Fairies, an exhibition of works by a dozen artists with HIV.
She also joined Visual AIDS, becoming one of only a dozen women in the group’s registry of HIV positive artists.  Although influenced by “all the disciplines of the 20th-century avantgarde,” she returned to her first love, abstract-expressionist painting, in the last decade of her life.

Like the rest of Thongleum Damviengkum's artwork on display at Cabbages and Condoms (www.pda.or.th/restaurant/default.asp), a restaurant in Bangkok, Thailand, this sign is made largely from out-of-date birth control pills and condoms. The nonprofit restaurant was founded by a nongovernmental organization, the Population and Community Development Association, to help empower the poor and fund sex and AIDS education. Safer-sex posters adorn the walls; out-of-date birth control pills and condoms have been crafted into quirky outfits for "greeter" mannequins and decorations for lamp shades and flowerpots. Asked about his work, the artist says, "There are people working here who have AIDS and everyone knows it and it creates no problems. Outside, however, there is much prejudice and stigma. Maybe my work will help get rid of the stigma. Maybe my work will make people think seriously about using condoms. . . . Humor is important if you want people to listen. Maybe someday people will be able to talk as freely about condoms as they do about cabbages."

Two Friends: Keith Haring and Tseng Kwong Chi Remembered

Best of friends during their lifetimes, artist Keith Haring and photographer Tseng Kwong Chi are currently being commemorated in two New York exhibitions. Keith Haring 20th Anniversary, which runs through April 10 at Tony Shafrazi Gallery, offers a wide array of Haring’s energetic paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, while the exhibition Tseng Kwong Chi at Paul Kasmin Gallery, on view through March 27, presents the photographer’s 1983 collaboration with Haring and choreographer Bill T. Jones. Haring painted Jones’ naked body with his signature motifs and Tseng photographed Jones in a variety of lively poses.

Taken together, these shows, which honor these artists 20 years after their untimely deaths, capture the vitality of the ‘80s NYC art scene through the work of two of its most talented contributors.

Downtown Pix: Mining the Fales Archives, 1961–1991 features over 300 photographs and other printed materials from Fales’s pioneering Downtown Collection. On view at the Grey Art Gallery from January 12 to April 3, 2010, the exhibition is drawn from the papers of artists, writers, poets, and arts organizations that comprise this important archive. The images presented in Downtown Pix create a rich photo-graphic portrait of the creative practices and social protests that defined the Downtown scene as it evolved over the course of three tumultuous decades.
