New Artist Editions for Visual AIDS

Produced for free distribution, Visual AIDS’s Artist Edition Broadsides are a creative response to the lack of provocative and frank HIV-prevention messages in our city and nationally. These Artist Edition Trading Cards and Tote Bags will be distributed for free through Pride Month - June 2010.

Play Smart is an honest and straight-forward approach to promote harm reduction, HIV testing and post-exposure prophylaxis. Trading cards are packaged with a sticker, condoms and lube.  The back of each trading card features information you need to know to Get Your Game On & Play Smart.



Visual AIDS in collaboration with The Men’s Sexual Health Project (M*SHP) is distributing Play Smart trading cards. M*SHP promotes sexual health among men who have sex with men in NYC and provide free on-site testing for HIV and STDs at sex clubs and parties.

Play Smart trading cards will also be available at various NYC bars, sport clubs, and LGBT organizations.  A list of locations is coming soon.  If you are interested in helping to distribute Play Smart trading cards through your organizations, please contact Visual AIDS at [email protected]

When faced with impossible questions, the notion of mortality or dire situations, many people turn to unconventional means or practices for answers, respite or foresight. To Believe brings together a selection of artists and artworks that incorporate the actions and practices related to a range of metaphysical beliefs. Through repetition, observation and portrayal of these rituals, events and the characters who perform them, the artists embrace and sometimes question the conclusiveness of these practices and in doing so suspend their own disbeliefs. The artists in To Believe are a mixture of skeptics and believers, experts and novices, participants and observers, who through their work consider the actions taken to achieve self-fulfillment and enlightenment through the otherworldly. Participating artists include David Cannon Dashiell, Robert Flack, Frank Haines, Rachel Harrison, Ben Judd, Susan MacWilliam, Joanna Malinowska, Shana Moulton, Bede Murphy, Jeanine Oleson,  Clifford Smith,  Spirit Tours (Dave Hardy & Siebren Versteeg) and Scott Treleaven.

This exhibition, Revealed: The Tradition of Male Homoerotic Art, not only shows the similarities between Michelangelo and Mapplethorpe; it also asserts a homosexual presence in Western art from the Renaissance to the present day by showing unambig-uous images of male same-sex desire. While such “homoerotic” imagery (defying time-restrictive labels such as “gay art” or “queer art”) evolved over time from something secretive, suppressed, and suggested into something public, accessible, and explicit, its continuous presence affirms the importance of intentionally expressing homosexual desire in art.
