London based artist Ben Judd will premiere a new performance created specifically for To Believe.  Through video and performance, Judd explores his relationship to specific groups and individuals who have their own rules and belief systems. Part of his interest in these belief systems is to position himself as both participant and observer when making the work, and to test the extent and nature of his own beliefs and preconceptions.



Blanko & Noiry  a trio consisting of To Believe artist Frank Haines with legendary electronic music innovator Chris Kachulis and Reuben Lorch-Miller will be performing a musical set where Kachulis channels songs he wrote in 1969.  Blanko & Noiry combine occult ritual, electronic dissonance, and art history to create a spectacle of sound and performance.

All events are free and at La MaMa La Galleria.

Through an ongoing collaboration with a UFO devotee group named Unarius, Bede Murphy frames that organization's creative endeavors as an example of the way art facilitates and represents belief. Inspired by their faith and the imagery they create, Bede’s own practice produces objects and images that test the perceptions of art, science, fact and fiction.

Citywalker tells the story of a man's journey rediscovering his identity, his sexuality and ethnicity. The quest for love and acceptance is multilayered in New York where everything is possible. Touched by the encounter with others, surrounded by high rises, bridges, intertwined highways, subway trains, the sound of sirens, club music, and the waves of the Hudson River…from the East to the West Village, gaining momentum as in a circuit party, he revisits universal archetypes in the bohemian lifestyle of a myriad of characters and dramatic situations, coexisting with flashbacks to his family's “island” and the nostalgia for the unconditional love he tries to find in New York at the expense of his own sanity. When existence in the fast lane is poisoned by deception and overwhelming feelings of abandonment, Citywalker realizes his journey towards identity has become a mantra revealing his wisdom through the mundane.

This exhibition presents the work of 11 distinguished artists who are dealing with issues regarding Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transexual civil rights. Fundamental concerns include gay marriage, the AIDS crisis, religious and legislative persecution, hate crimes and gay sexuality. Gay marriage is a controversial issue and a subject that Brooklyn based artist Patricia Cronin personally confronts through her well-known classically sculpted funerary monument Memorial To A Marriage. She also presents her intimate series of erotic watercolors. The AIDS crisis devastated the gay community beginning in the 1980s. Outspoken artists affected by this disease explored its effects in their artwork. One of the most influential figures of this time was New York based artists David Wojnarowicz. His “Untitled”(One Day this Kid…) reveals an intimate narrative that shows how devastating this disease is. More recently, Daniel Goldsteinʼs Medicine Man approaches AIDS on conceptual level. The suspended humanshaped sculpture consists of steel wire threaded with nearly 300 donated empty HIV medication bottles and 139 syringes. The sculpture is beautiful in spite of its foundation in hopelessness and despair. Arthur Robinson Williams presents intimate portraits of transgendered individuals and couples undergoing physical and emotional transformation in his photographic series My Right Self. Zanele Muholi takes us on a photographic journey through post-apartheid South Africa focusing on the subjective experiences of black lesbians in two of her series Only Half The Picture and Being.

Screening of works by Susan MacWilliam

Belfast based artist Susan MacWilliam represented Northern Ireland with her solo exhibition Remote Viewing, at the 2009 Venice Biennale. Through anecdote, reconstruction and editing MacWilliam’s works explore forms of portraiture and interpretation, and provides a historical visual record of cases within the history of parapsychology and psychical research. The works consider the world of the paranormal, the supersensory and the tradition of psychical research. MacWilliam has made works based on historical cases of materialization mediums, x-ray vision, optograpms, table tilting, poltergeists and dermo optical perception.
