Andrew McPhail is an established artist who moved to Hamilton from Toronto five years ago. Practicing in sculpture, drawing, painting and performance for more than twenty-five years, his works have explored a broad range of subject matter. As a person living with HIV, several of McPhail’s past works have focused on the solemn emotions surrounding his experience of this disease, offering humbling insight. all my little failures invigorates the well-honed subjects of his past practice and inserts a witty commentary that appeals to broader issues of human wellness and the anxieties that many people experience related to disease and sickness.

The exhibition takes its title from McPhail’s central piece in the exhibition, an immense fabric-like cloak made of over 60,000 BAND-AIDs. Worn by a mannequin, it is a haunting and overwhelming mass. At the same time, McPhail’s obsessive building of this blanket-like form is humorous—the piece is so exaggerated that it appears to be ridiculous. It speaks to the capacity of BAND-AIDs to protect a wound, and also to futility. It combines the high art of sculpture with the methods of low art through his use of adhesive bandages as a medium, in an analytical and comical manner. The phrase "all my little failures" refers to the little things in life that many people blame themselves for—those questions that one ruminates on: "Could I have done something differently? And if so, how would that have changed who I am today?" His works raise questions about the amount of control humans actually have over their own fate and wellness and how this relates to global health issues.

This fall, the AGH foyer wall will feature a new piece by McPhail: a conglomeration of dollar store synthetic hair extensions are strung together to spell out the word "poof." Referencing a slang term for "gay" with humour and hyperbole, this piece is a bold encounter with a historically derogatory term. With this piece, McPhail re-introduces the phrase "poof" as a fun and frivolous expression, inviting viewers to share a positive attitude toward queer identity.

Garry Hayes began his artistic career with studies at The American Academy of Art, Chicago, finishing with a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Taking his diploma in hand he headed immediately to the bright lights of New York City.

Here, Hayes first tried his hand at painting and quickly moved to sculpture. Frustrated by the prohibitive cost and storage challenges of both techniques, he decided to shift scale and started experimenting with collage. Soon, Hayes found he had thousands of images. Box after box of scraps and clippings quickly accumulated. Suddenly, Hayes found himself with too many choices!

The death of a friend left him with a huge collection of art books. Thumbing through the pages, he saw image after image of beautiful expression and form. Picking up a pair of scissors, Hayes started cutting. A rip here, a snip there, a well placed fold and before he was done, Hayes had discovered his millieu. Seeking out artbooks, and auction and gallery catalogues for their graphic possibilities, each book presented him a treasure trove of random discovery. In his hands, they were no longer books, but a palette Hayes could cut, fold and manipulate into a blend between collage, sculpture and visual poetry. These are not appropriations but re-creations. Hayes has manipulated them into a new form, his own 3-D, popup cubist sculpture.

Merged with a tinge of ‘mountain mythology’ remembered from boyhood vacations in the mountains of Kentucky, his new wire drawings and collages are always calling us ‘back to nature’.

Love's Body (art in the age of AIDS) will aim to present more clearly the problems created by contemporary representations of the body.

AIDS is a problem common to every country throughout the contemporary world.  From the late eighties to early nineties AIDS became more than just an incurable disease that took the lives of numerous artists, it also provided photography and art with the opportunity to carry out a fundamental reassessment of social problems such as prejudice or discrimination.  In their work, the many artists who were infected with AIDS confronted not only the disease itself, but also these 'social sicknesses', treating them as personal issues and creating numerous works that forced us to address these problems.  Even today, new possibilities of expression that force us to consider transformations of sexuality or expressions of others, representations of the body or questions of art and politics continue to be produced. 

This exhibition will present works that are powerful enough to have influenced aspects of art and photography while reappraising and redefining their meaning.

Patrick Webb’s Punchinello is uncanny. No matter what adventure or trial he’s thrown into—parade, gym, rodeo, fire, brawl, the list goes on—Punchinello continues to surprise with his unique combination of strangeness and familiarity. People seem to vaguely recognize Punch, even identify with him, while at the same time not being able to understand fully his ongoing presence in Webb’s paintings. Why Punchinello? He seems to confound as much as he beguiles. Could it be that Punchinello belongs to that paradoxical realm that Sigmund Freud attempts to define, in his 1919 essay entitled “The Uncanny,” as “that class of the frightening which leads back to what is known of old and long familiar”?
