Meet the artists and models of Visual AIDS's Play Smart Trading Cards, on Tuesday, Sept 7 from 6-8 PM at Boxers.  Have your special edition trading cards signed by the artists and get your picture taken with some of the models.
 
Play Smart Trading Cards are a creative response to the lack of provocative and frank HIV-prevention & Safer Sex messages in our city and nationally.
 
Play Smart trading cards feature sexy, athletic pin-ups photographed by international artists Aaron Cobbett, inkedKenny, Greg Mitchell and Slava Mogutin. Each artist created new works for two trading cards and one sticker, which are packaged with condoms and lube - and are distributed for free. The back of each trading card features information you need to know to get your game on and play smart. There are a total of 8 different trading cards and 4 different stickers. Collect them all.  
 
Tuesday’s are also Chelsea's Longest Running Happy Hour at Boxers from 4:00pm - 9:30 pm with 2 for 1 drinks.

Visual AIDS's Artist Edition Broadsides are a creative response to the lack of provocative and frank HIV-prevention messages in our city and nationally. Cover The Stump (Be a Lover Who Uses a Rubber) tote bags designed by Steve DeFrank, will be distributed for free through Summer 2010.  Pick yours up on Thursday, July 8 at Thatcher Projects - while supplies last.  More information on Visual AIDS's Artist Edition Broadsides here.

The original artworks created for the bag's design will be on view and available to own for $1200.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated by the gallery and the artist to Visual AIDS.

London based artist Ben Judd will premiere a new performance created specifically for To Believe.  Through video and performance, Judd explores his relationship to specific groups and individuals who have their own rules and belief systems. Part of his interest in these belief systems is to position himself as both participant and observer when making the work, and to test the extent and nature of his own beliefs and preconceptions.



Blanko & Noiry  a trio consisting of To Believe artist Frank Haines with legendary electronic music innovator Chris Kachulis and Reuben Lorch-Miller will be performing a musical set where Kachulis channels songs he wrote in 1969.  Blanko & Noiry combine occult ritual, electronic dissonance, and art history to create a spectacle of sound and performance.

All events are free and at La MaMa La Galleria.

Mary Ellen Carroll is a conceptual artist who lives and works in New York City and Houston, Texas. Moving deftly among large-scale architectural interventions, experimental film, staged events, sculpture, photography, and book projects, her work interrogates the relationship between subjectivity, language, and power. The notion of representation and identification has always been at the core of Carroll’s oeuvre, and her dedication to a political and social critique that is consciously developed without a signature style.  In 2010 SteidlMACK published the monograph Mary Ellen Carroll: MEC, with text by Jonathan Flatley and Hamza Walker.  Mary Ellen Carroll is also the executor of The Estate of Robert Blanchon.  www.mecarroll.com

John Kelly is a performance and visual artist whose creative work runs the gamut from mixed media dance theatre works, to vocal concerts, to exhibitions.  His work explores the character of creative genius as it occurs in the gradations between the ephemeral and the tangible.  Specific works have pondered Egon Schiele, Caravaggio, Antonin Artaud, Joni Mitchell, Barbette, Jean Cocteau; autobiography, the Berlin Wall, the Troubadours, the AIDS epidemic, and Expressionistic Film. These works have been performed at The Kitchen, PS 1, the Warhol Museum, the Whitney Biennial, The Tate Modern, and BAM. Paintings, drawings, photographs and video works have been exhibited in galleries and museums including Alexander Gray Associates; MIT List Visual Art Center; ICA Philadelphia; MACRO, Italy; Biagiotti Progetto Arte, Italy; New Museum, NY. He was a recent Rome Prize Fellow in Visual Art at the American Academy in Rome, and is currently a 2010 Armory Artist in Residence at New York’s Park Avenue Armory.  www.johnkellyperformance.org

Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS and Jerry Mitchell announce an upcoming edition of BROADWAY BARES: SOLO STRIPS “AROUND THE WORLD” , the return of the sexy new event featuring original strips from the hottest men and women currently on and off Broadway.  Whether it be spicy boys, exotic girls, or steamy dances, “AROUND THE WORLD” will arouse everyone’s taste for Broadway’s hottest bodies.

Dancers scheduled to appear include Broadway Bares favorites: Dave August (Naked Boys Singing), Kristine Bendul (Come Fly Away), Ward Billeisen (Curtains), and James Brown III (Memphis).  SOLO STRIPS "AROUND THE WORLD" will also feature a special performance by guest vocalist Marty Thomas (Xanadu) and the Mark Stuart Dance Theatre with choreography by Mark Stuart.
