Artists in Transition, an organization that works with artists and performers facing physical and/or mental health issues is having its inaugural conference on Sunday, April 11, 2010 from 12 noon - 5:00 pm at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT. We are co-sponsoring the conference, along with over 100 other local, state and national arts, health and advocacy organizations.
 
Inspiring architect/sculptor Tom Luckey will keynote and awesome entertainment will be provided by Our Time Theatre. There will be outstanding networking opportunities and 15 information-packed breakout sessions on diverse subjects such as healthcare, maximizing employment potential, grant writing, etc., plus speakers will include artists and performers who themselves are dealing with health and disability issues and making their art and lives a creative force!

Visual AIDS will be participating in the New York City Council’s “I Talk About HIV/AIDS Because...” campaign for World AIDS Day.

The New York City Council, together with HIV/AIDS organizations across the five boroughs, has launched a YouTube-based HIV/AIDS awareness campaign that will continue until World AIDS Day, December 1st, 2010. Why talk about HIV/AIDS to the people in your life? We know that open and honest conversations can prevent new HIV infections and reduce the stigma attached to people living with HIV/AIDS. Harvard exhibition of visual media in AIDS activism marks 20 year anniversary
of the formation of ACT UP New York -- Premiere of the ACT UP Oral History Project

The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts and the Harvard Art Museum present ACT UP New York: Activism, Art, and the AIDS Crisis, 1987–1993, an exhibition of over 70 politically-charged posters, stickers, and other visual media that emerged during a pivotal moment of AIDS activism in New York City. The exhibition chronicles New York’s AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) through an examination of compelling graphics created by various artist collectives that populated the group. The exhibition also features the premiere of the ACT UP Oral History Project, a suite of over 100 video interviews with surviving members of ACT UP New York that offer a retrospective portal on a decisive moment in the history of the gay rights movement, 20th-century visual art, our nation’s discussion of universal healthcare, and the continuing HIV/AIDS epidemic. The exhibition opens just over 20 years after the formation of ACT UP and also marks the 40 year anniversary of the Stonewall riots, the defining event that marked the start of the gay rights movement in the United States. The exhibition ACT UP New York: Activism, Art, and the AIDS Crisis, 1987–1993 provides an opportunity to reinvigorate a debate around the realities of HIV/AIDS today, and about the links between visual art, political activism, health, and human rights. Equality to End AIDS: Oct 10 Rally & Vigil

As tens of thousands of LGBT Americans and their allies converge on Washington next month to march for equal rights,  they also will remind the nation and the LGBT community that the AIDS epidemic is not over as well as remember the more than half a million Americans who have died from the disease.

The Equality To End AIDS rally and vigil will take place Saturday, October 10, the day before the massive Equality March.  Equality To End AIDS will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 pm on the Ellipse, in front of the White House, and feature an inspiring roster of speakers and performers (mostly HIV+), culminating in a candlelight vigil.

Proposed Removal of HIV Entry Ban

From the CDC

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are proposing the removal of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection from the list of diseases that keep people who are not U.S. citizens from entering the United States.

HHS has authority to promulgate regulations that establish requirements for the medical examination of aliens (immigrants, refugees, asylees, and parolees) before they may be admitted into the United States.

2009 National LGBTI Health Summit

This summer, Chicago will be playing host to the 2009 National LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex) Health Summit. Beginning August 14th and running through lunch on Tuesday the 18th, the Summit will focus on “Health Through the Life Course” and is dedicated to preserving and improving the emotional, physical, spiritual, intellectual, psychological, environmental, and social health and wellness of LGBTI people of all races, ages, and professional/non professional backgrounds; from urban and rural settings; representing every socioeconomic class.

As the first months of the new Congress and Obama Administration draw to a close, is there light at the end of the HIV/AIDS prevention tunnel?

After years of the desk sitting empty, we now have a well-respected AIDS advocate serving as head of the Office of National AIDS Policy. The head of FDA is a needle- exchange fan. The new and rearranged members of Congress have found their footing, and already have beaten back proposals to keep funding abstinence-only.

But can the changes we need happen in a time of economic turmoil and competing priorities?

New avenues of power are being formed, and this panel will help you learn how to navigate them effectively as advocates for HIV Prevention Justice.

Nearly three decades since the onset of the AIDS epidemic in the United States, Black men who have sex with men (MSM) have represented a significantly disproportionate number of cases of HIV and AIDS. A key element in addressing HIV-related health disparities for Black gay men relates to the development of theoretical frameworks that are grounded within culturally relevant conceptualizations. Within this context, the objective of this seminar series is to better understand the role of stigma, marginalization, and structural inequalities in Black gay men's communities, which provide a theoretical framework to examine the complexities of the AIDS epidemic, as situated in the everyday, lived experiences of Black gay men.
