Announcing: NOW, edited by Cheryl Clark (Poet, Activist and Scholar) and Steven G. Fullwood (Director, Black Gay and Lesbian Archive, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture)
NOW, a forthcoming journal from Aids Project Los Angeles
(APLA), is seeking submissions from writers and artists who envision
new and insightful ways to talk about the black queer bodies, women's
health, the house ball scene in relationship to HIV/AIDS, and the
impact of HIV/AIDS on cultural production in the black LGBT community
for the last 25 years.
The editors are interested in submissions that re-imagine and rethink
ways in which the scourge of HIV/AIDS affects gays, lesbians, as well
as bisexuals and trans men and women. Instead of prescriptive pieces
that are either redemptive or morally structured in tone and thrust,
the editors want submissions that enter the conversation of disease and
illness in thoughtful, non-judgmental, and provocative ways.
The editors want to continue in the tradition that APLA, who along with
the New York State Black Gay Network, produced two ground-breaking
journals, Think Again (eds. Colin Robinson and Steven G. Fullwood) and If We Have to Take Tomorrow
(eds. Frank Leon Roberts and Marvin K. White). Those anthologies
featured works about black gay men and HIV risk, and highlighted the
complexity of black men's lives at the intersection of critical and
creative cultural production. We wish to create a journal that will
enlighten and encourage readers to think again about the past, present,
and future of this pandemic. If you have a story to tell, images to
share, or a voice that wants to be heard, we welcome your submission.
