In 1953, Christine Jorgensen stepped off a plane in New York City and kick-started the sexual revolution.  Based on a true story, this film recounts how a shy insecure boy from the Bronx became "The Most Famous Woman in the World. Tickets are still available for the staged reading of this screenplay, sponsored by NewFest, the New York LGBT Film Festival.

Visual AIDS honored at A Night of 1000 Gowns

Amy Sadao and Nelson Santos were knighted by the Imperial Court of New York at A Night of 1000 Gowns on Saturday, March 21, 2009.  Amy and Nelson were knighted by the lovely Empress XXII Charlene Chivoe and handsome Emperor XVII Rob Hunter de Woofs (above) for the work of Visual AIDS.

"We were honored to be part of this beautiful event and to be surrounded by so much fabulousness!  The ICNY is wonderful and generous organization, who has not only volunteered their time at Postcards from the Edge for Visual AIDS, but also have given generously to many HIV, LGBT, and other non-profit service organizations." - Sir Nelson and Dame Amy.

Making a mark is not only about art it is about expressing a repressed voice within the history of Australia, exhibiting and promote Aboriginal art on our own terms.

It has only been within the last 30 years that Aboriginal art has been taken out of a sterile ethnographic museum context and recognized as an aestetic and cultural expression as unique as the landscape that it often depicts.

Boomalli is a resource centre for Aboriginal artists as well as the wider artistic community and continues to make a mark on art and culture in Australia today.}

Dear Cockettes: an exhibition for and about the legendary acid queens The Cockettes just recently opened at UKS (the Young Artists Society) in Oslo, Norway. The Cockettes, who emerged from San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury community, performed "transvestite-glitter-fairie-theatre masques"--elaborate performances which even to the contemporary eye seem remarkably avant garde. "Gender fuck" is a term often associated with the group, as their signature beards, glitter, and transsexual costumes, according to Allen Ginsberg, enforced a "gay contribution to the realization that we're not a hundred percent masculine or feminine, but a mixture of hormones." The exhibition, which opened last week with a number of performances including one by London's 'House of Egypt' includes original vintage posters, photographic prints, scripts, newspaper articles, and other paraphernalia. The exhibition will include screenings of a number of rare films as well as the eponymous documentary feature by David Wiessman and Bill Webber (amazing clips and photos of which can be seen on the film's website). 'Dear Cockettes' should be seen as an important historical exhibition--one that looks beyond the usual conceptual and minimalist art history of the 1960s and 70s to cast a wider net of social relevance and cultural influence. The Cockettes can be seen not only as a precedent to glam rock era stars David Bowie and Elton John, but also contemporary performers like Devendra Banhart.

This December the Sylvia Rivera Law Project will be auctioning off exciting works of art to raise funds to support the project's fight for gender self-determination.

The Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) provides free legal services to low-income transgender communities and transgender communities of color. They also educate the public about trans oppression and support community organizing work that fights for the rights of their community. SRLP has assisted over 350 clients facing violence and discrimination in prisons, juvenile justice facilities, shelters, educational institutions and at the hands of the police since its inception in 2003. SRLP trains judges, health professionals, and other community organizations on how to provide respectful and affirming services. The most pressing issue faced daily at SRLP is the vast amount community members who are unable to access the most basic of services to meet the most vital of needs (such as shelter, health care, and education) because of rampant discrimination and violence.

The art auction will be held at the Orchard Street Gallery at 139 Orchard Street on December 4, 2005. There will be a opening of the works from 6-8pm on December 3 with a featured DJ spinning. The main event on Sunday, December 4 will start at 4pm with a preview and silent auction of over 30 small works from a variety of artists including local artists, artwork by SRLP clients, and renowned artists. At 7pm a live auction of other works will commence. The live auction ends at 8pm and silent auction closes at 8:30pm, so don't miss out on the bidding action. Artist's work to be featured at this event include William Wegman, Patty Chang, Deborah Edmeades, Annie Sprinkle, Glenn Ligon, Andrea Geyer, Moyra Davey, Christy Gast, Hank O'Neal, Mo Cassanova, Zoe Bissell, Sam Gordon, Emily Riedman, Allen Frame, Valerie Shaff, Yvonne Rainer, Klara Hobza, Sara Saltzman, A.L. Steiner, Josh Faught, Leah DeVun, Emily Roysdon, Felicia Murray, Matt Keegan, Zackary Drucker, and more! The event will also include small crafts, artist books and limited edition silkscreen t-shirts for sale.  This is really amazing work for a great cause!
